  • Sonne – Rammstein; A song about oppression?

    Be the First to Comment!

And now for some hardcore Industrial Metal – Rammstein. Of course, they are not sombre and somewhat disconcerting like Laibach. Rather, this famous German band offers interesting lyrics, creative if at times macabre videos and of course, beautiful music. Read more

  • All the loney people

A word of advice to bands; when the brilliant notion of doing a cover enters your mind, do heed how the end product will sound. Will it carry the song into a whole new level, giving it new layers of depth and meaning? Or will it be the yardstick measurement of what not to do?

Well, this is one instance where a song cover did exceptionally well.

The song in question? Eleanor Rigby and the band of the hour is Godhead.

  • Weird Al’s ‘Your Pitiful’ Almost Didn’t See the Light of Day

If you have ever heard the hit single by James Blunt, “Your Beautiful,” where he sings in a very high voice with a romantic guitar riff in the background, than you already know of the song that I am talking about. Now to the point: Weird Al Yankovic made a song to parody this hit single called “Your Pitiful.” But the song never really and never truly will, see the light of the day for Al, or James. You see both artists were in agreement here that they did indeed want to have a funny parody of the tune floating around for people to enjoy, but other forces that were greater than they prevented their endeavors from ever truly becoming a reality. • Does Anybody Remember Musical Comedy Great: Tom Lehrer?

If you have never heard of Tom Lehrer before, it is more than likely because you are too young to know about him, myself included. However, my parents, and their parents grew up listening to this musical genius, who was also a tenured profession at a well known Ivy League school, and who happened to be a leading scientist during the late 1940s, and the early 1950s, before he started touring the world to offer up his brand of comedy.

A comedic, and in your face performance, especially considering the day and age where nobody talked about anything that was socially unacceptable—but Mr. Lehrer begged to differ, and did it quite well too! Rather, the comedic musical fathoming of Tom Lehrer broke many social taboos of the day, equally offending the masses. But in turn, also made even more people laugh out loud. So like Elvis Presley was to Rock and Roll, Tom Lehrer was equally to comedic music. Read more

  • Weird Al’s ‘White and Nerdy’ Quite Possibly his Funniest Video Yet

    1 New Comment: Join In!

Calling all Weird Al fanatics, and those who may have never fancied this odd cat in the past: his newest video—‘White and Nerdy’—is amongst his best to-date, and is complimented by a larger production budget, great editing and some really funny and catchy lyrics that will most certainly make you laugh out loud more than once. Spawned by his newer album, “Straight Outta Lynwood,” which hit store shelves about a year and a half ago, where Al takes on a new satire: making fun of rap songs and rapping. Yes, I know, he already did something similar to this in his funny music video hit, parodying the Coolio Song, entitled “Amish Paradise”; (A satire from Coolio’s ‘Gansta Paradise.)

But this time it’s a fast rapping, hard hitting, total dork that is Al, trying to be a cool gangster rapper, but entirely failing in all of his sordid attempts. And if you had thought that you had seen everything that Al could ever make that was funny, think again! Read more

  • Pioneers of Metal

If I were to talk about Heavy Metal, I would talk about excellent music, guitar riffs, fantastic vocals, the look, the feel, the raw edge and of course, being true to yourself.

But everything has a beginning and for Heavy Metal that legendary starting point was Judas Priest.

Fair enough, there were other bands, other awesome singing groups around. But keep in mind, most of them were still heavily influenced by the Blues.

Who put the Metal in Rock and fused it to be Heavy Metal? The Metal Gods themselves. That's right, that was Judas Priest. Read more

  • 5 Music Videos That Should Not Be

    Be the First to Comment!

The music video has been a unique art form for nearly 30 years. The
medium has produced some truly inspired works of art, especially out of
a format that is intended to be little more than a promotional tool. Of
course, for every Sistine Chapel there will always be a thousand
    midi-laden, clip-art-infected websites from the mid '90's. Here I
present to you a mere 5 of the countless music videos that just never
    should have been created.

First off, the criteria for selection:
Each one of these videos isn't merely bad or uninventive. Every video
here represents some exceptionally awful aspect of the art and the
people who make it. Without further ado...

    Alphaville- Forever Young

Oh, boy. Where to start? I'm not giving much weight to the songs themselves
in determining the awfulness of these videos, but this gratingly
melodramatic pile of cliches doesn't help an already dire situation. In
its attempt to be taken seriously, the video for "Forever Young" looks
a lot like unwitting self-parody. Read more
