It's that time of year again -- awards season. Yawn. Of course, this includes the 2012 Grammy Awards, which once again fail to really represent rock music. This year's great rock hope: the Foo Fighters. They're up for multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for Wasting Light. They'll also be performing live on the show, so there's that.
But as a whole, if you're a fan of rock music (and no, Bon Iver doesn't count), you probably will watch something else.I'd love to say that I'm happy with all of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards nominees, but I'm definitely not. Sure, I think Wasting Light by the Foo Fighters is a great rock album. But the other nominees? Meh. In case you haven't bothered to look, the nominees in the Best Rock Album category are Jeff Beck for Rock 'N' Roll Party Honoring Les Paul, Foo Fighters for Wasting Light, the Red Hot Chili Peppers for I'm With You and Wilco for The Whole Love. Wait, what?! Wilco? Forgive me if I don't think this one belongs in this particular category.
Best Rock Song is even worse, with nominees including Mumford & Sons for "The Cave" and "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" by Coldplay. Once again, we're blurring all sorts of lines between rock, pop and alternative. I'll be the first one to admit that I really, really like Mumford & Sons, but I don't think they're rockers. Maybe Grammy just didn't know where to put them this year? Foo Fighters, by the way, are also nominated for Best Rock Song (for "Walk"), along with "Down by the Water" by The Decemberists and "Lotus Flower" by Radiohead.
Like I said before: Yawn.
I'll probably watch the 2012 Grammy Awards this Sunday, but I won't expect a rock extravaganza. I gave up on that hope years ago. At least Bruce Springsteen is performing. Thank you, Boss, for injecting some rock into this spectacle that is the Grammy Awards.
My One Prediction: It'll be a fun night for you, if you're an Adele fan.
Rock on.
