Van Halen postpones tour because Eddie Van Halen is ailing

Guitarist underwent emergency surgery.

Bad news for Van Halen fans who were hoping to catch some shows as the band toured Japan later this year: All shows for the remainder of 2012 have been canceled. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen is ill, and unfortunately, he needed emergency surgery!

Eddie is suffering from diverticulitis, and I can tell you from experience, it's no joke. If the doctors believed he needed immediate surgery now to treat the inflammatory intestinal disease, it's best he got it quickly. Get well soon, because I hope to hear this on tour next year:

Eddie Van Halen Guitar Solo 2012 Live at the LA Forum

I hate hearing that Eddie Van Halen is ailing. When I first heard that Van Halen had decided to scratch the rest of the band's shows for the year, I immediately thought it was Eddie, though I worried perhaps he'd relapsed into his addiction problems. Fortunately, that isn't the case. Unfortunately, he's really sick.

Van Halen made the announcement about the tour cancelations earlier today. In a statement on the band's official website, Van Halen confirmed that Eddie has already had the surgery for diverticulitis, and will spend the remainder of the year recovering, though "no further surgeries are needed." The November 2012 Van Halen dates in Japan are being "rescheduled," and Van Halen "looks forward to seeing and playing for their fans in 2013."

So that's good news. Eddie Van Halen does have a long recovery ahead of him. I mentioned I had some experience with diverticulitis, and I do: My spouse underwent an emergency surgery for the same condition last year. It involved a colon resection -- essentially, removing the diseased portion of the colon that was causing incredible pain and a myriad of other horrible symptoms. He's doing great, though it took several months before he felt "back to normal" again.

Get well soon, Eddie! All of us are eager to see Van Halen back out on the road as soon as possible, but we want you to be healthy and happy, too. Hopefully North America will get some Van Halen shows next year!
